Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your account. When enabled, you'll need both your password and a code from your authenticator app to sign in. We recommend using Google Authenticator, Aegis, or Authy.

Set up Thunderbird
Connect Thunderbird to your mailbox using single sign-on.
Thunderbird signs you in through the portal's single sign-on, so you never type your password into the mail client. Download Thunderbird first, then follow these steps.
- Add the account. Thunderbird → New → Existing Mail Account. Enter your name and your full email address. Leave the password field empty. Choose Configure manually.
- Enter the servers.
Incoming (IMAP) —:— Incoming security — Outgoing (SMTP) —:— Outgoing security — Username your full email address - Set authentication to OAuth2 for both the incoming and outgoing server. Thunderbird keeps outgoing servers separately — if you only change the incoming one, receiving will work and sending will fail.
- Add the OAuth2 details. Account Settings → Server Settings →
Advanced → tick Use custom OAuth2 settings:
Copy the endpoints exactly, including theClient ID — Authorisation endpoint — Token endpoint — Scopes — Redirect URI https://localhost Client secret leave empty Use PKCE leave unticked /protocol/openid-connect/…ending. A shortened URL is the most common mistake: the sign-in window appears, you log in, and the connection still fails. - Sign in. Thunderbird opens a sign-in window. Use your normal account credentials. Thunderbird stores a token, not your password.
- Sending fails but receiving works — the OAuth2 settings were applied to the incoming server only. Thunderbird keeps the outgoing server separately; apply them there too.
- You sign in successfully and it still says authentication failed
— the endpoints are usually truncated. They must end in
/protocol/openid-connect/authand/protocol/openid-connect/token. - Nothing happens when you click sign in — try ticking Use system web browser.
- Still stuck? Contact your administrator with the time you tried, so it can be matched to the sign-in log.
